Music Director
Christopher Kovarik is a Vancouver (BC) based composer. He writes in a multitude of genres, and has received commissions and performances from various Canadian ensembles. He holds degrees from the universities of Windsor (Ont.) and British Columbia.
While his earliest professional works were orchestral, his focus lately has been on smaller ensembles. His works have been commissioned, workshopped and performed by groups such as the Arditti Quartet, the Ad Mare Wind Quintet, the Tempest Flute Ensemble, the Windsor Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony, Tiresias, and the Comeaux High School Band (Lafayette, La). His Hymn Preludes have been performed across North America by organist David Palmer, and Jupiter (as part of Cosmophony) across Canada by Rachel Iwaasa.
Chris’s compositional style is unabashedly neo-romantic. His harmonic language, rooted in tradition, is laced with elements of jazz, and, as befits an organist, he revels in counterpoint. Thick, complex textures and a strong sense of form lend a certain weight to much of his music, but it is not without humour. He is also a firm believer in melody, and this more than anything else contributes to the immediate appeal and broad accessibility of his music.
